Blue Cash Preferred Card Fees

The Blue Cash Preferred Credit Card comes with a $0 intro annual fee offer for the first 12 months, making its perks all the more attractive. Afterward, the ongoing annual fee is
$95 (See Rates and Fees). While this may seem a bit high it’s easily offset by the cash back you earn on day-to-day expenses.

Like other popular credit cards, Blue Cash Preferred has additional fees such as a foreign transaction fee, a cash advance fee, etc (See Rates and Fees).

The foreign transaction fee is 2.7% of each transaction after conversion to U.S. dollars (See Rates and Fees).

American Express charges a cash advance fee of either $10 or 5% of the cash amount of each cash advance, whichever is greater (See Rates and Fees).

Late and returned payments could result in penalty fees of up to $40 (See Rates and Fees).

The AmEx Blue Cash Preferred Card does not support balance transfers.

Blue Cash Preferred Card APR

This credit card issuer waives the APR on purchases for the first twelve months of card membership. The regular
variable purchase APR is 13.99% - 23.99%, depending on your creditworthiness (See Rates and Fees).

Next, let’s take a look at some of the key characteristics of this credit card.

Key Characteristics of the Blue Cash Preferred Card

Here are some key characteristics of this card:

  • Unsecured credit card - The Blue Cash Preferred Card is an unsecured credit card that doesn’t require a security deposit.
  • Welcome offer - Blue Cash Preferred cardholders earn a $300 statement credit after spending $3,000 on purchases during the first six months of account opening.
  • Cashback on everyday spending - This AmEx card offers cash back on a wide range of essential purchases.

Based on the Consumer Expenditure Survey by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average U.S. household spent about $4,942 on food at home annually in 2020. This means a family could easily max out their 6% rewards on the grocery spending bonus category, which alone is worth approximately $296 in cashback.

To top it off, you can earn more cashback every time additional card members make an eligible purchase with their card through the same American Express card account.

  • High annual fee - The regular annual fee of $95 (first year is waived) might seem a bit too much at first but it's easily offset by an excellent rewards rate centered around essential expenses such as food and gas.
