American Express Platinum Card Rewards Rate

The Amex Platinum Card has a robust Membership Rewards® Program. Similar to Chase Ultimate Rewards® points, Membership Rewards points are of high value and are very flexible.

Here’s a breakdown of how Platinum cardmembers can earn bonus points with the Amex Membership Rewards Program:

Cardholders earn 5X points for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel up to $500,000 in combined purchases per calendar year. Prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel also earn 5X Membership Rewards points.

The program also rewards you with 1x points per dollar spent on other eligible purchases.

Points can be redeemed in a variety of ways - gift cards, hotel bookings and upgrades, flight bookings and upgrades, shopping, entertainment. You can even transfer your points to Amex partner programs such as Delta SkyMiles®, Iberia Plus, Marriott Bonvoy™, Etihad Guest, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, and more.

Now that we've discussed Amex Platinum benefits and rewards rate, let's look at the kind of score you need and fees you can expect:

American Express Platinum Card Credit Score Requirements

To qualify for the Amex Platinum Card, you’ll need a credit score within the Good - Excellent range.

What’s that?

A VantageScore over 600 or, a FICO® score of  670 or more, falls in the Good - Excellent credit score range.

Having a qualifying credit score has a large impact on your approval odds. Apart from the credit score, the card issuer may also consider your income, existing debts, and other pertinent information.

American Express Platinum Card Fees

The annual fee for the Platinum Card is $695 (
See Rates and Fees). The annual fee for additional cards is $175 for up to 3 additional cards on one Amex card account (See Rates and Fees).

$695 is a lot of money to be paying annually for a credit card, but this money comes with several rewards that can easily offset the annual fee.

Like other popular travel credit cards, Amex Platinum has additional fees such as a cash advance fee, a late payment fee, etc.

The Platinum Card has a cash advance fee of either $10 or 5% of the cash amount of each cash advance, whichever is greater (See Rates and Fees).

The credit card company can also charge Platinum cardholders a late payment fee of up to $40 and a returned payment fee of up to $40 (See Rates and Fees).

On the bright side, the Amex Platinum Card doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees (See Rates and Fees) which makes it an ideal card for the globetrotter.

Note that this card doesn't support making a balance transfer.

American Express Platinum Card APR

The credit card issuer will charge you a variable APR of 15.99% to 22.99%, based on your creditworthiness and additional factors determined at the time of account opening (
See Rates and Fees).

Amex Platinum has a variable cash advance APR of 25.24% (See Rates and Fees).

Additionally, this credit card also has a variable Penalty APR of 29.99% (See Rates and Fees). When applied, the penalty APR will apply for at least six months, after which the card issuer reviews your American Express Card account.

Note: The credit card company gives Platinum cardholders at least 25 days after the close of each billing period to pay their credit card bills. If you pay your entire balance each month, then no interest is charged on a purchase.

Next, let’s take a look at some of the key characteristics of this credit card.

Key Characteristics of The Platinum Card from American Express

  • Access to The Centurion® Network

American Express has expanded The Centurion® Network to include 40+ Centurion airport lounges and Studio partner locations worldwide. You can use your Platinum Card to get complimentary lounge access to these airport lounges and get exclusive perks like complimentary food and drinks.
