Who is the Reflex Mastercard® for?
The Reflex Mastercard®, issued by Celtic Bank, is created specifically for those with a poor or fair credit score. Finding an unsecured credit card can be difficult with a poor credit history, but the Reflex Mastercard® welcomes all hopeful potential cardholders, regardless of their credit score.
If you’re looking for ways to improve your poor credit score by maintaining a credit card, the Reflex Mastercard® may be worthwhile to look at. Before applying, you must be aware of the monthly and annual fees that come alongside the card that will be discussed more in-depth below.
No Initial Bonus or Cash Back
Just like with most other credit cards designed for those with poor or fair credit history, the Reflex Mastercard® has no additional perks or rewards system. This card was designed to help increase credit scores slowly and steadily, not indulge in big expenses to reap rewards. The base credit limit for this card is $225 after fees, so a cash back system wouldn’t make much sense either.
Despite the Reflex Mastercard® being straightforward in its target audience and offerings, there are a few benefits that can be appealing to any card owner. First, Celtic Bank will report your use of the credit card to all three credit bureaus monthly. Manage the card wisely every month and your credit score will rise. Although this is industry standard with most other credit cards, it’s good to know that this card, which was designed to help raise low credit scores, also has this feature. Also, applicants with FICO scores below 629 might even be approved for this card.
Secondly, Reflex Mastercard® maintains a zero fraud liability policy. You will only be responsible for the charges and fees you incur. Any fraudulent activity or expenses will be handled by the bank. Again, this is quite an industry standard, but it is important to know that the Reflex Mastercard® carries this policy as well.
Monthly and Annual Fees
Before you go ahead and submit your application for the Reflex Mastercard®, please note the monthly and annual fees associated with this card. To start off, the card has an annual fee between $75 and $99, based on creditworthiness. There are also monthly fees that start after the first year of use that go up to $10 per month, which can total up to $120 in a year. The credit limit for the Reflex Mastercard® is up to $1,000. All of these expenses can eat away from the already-low credit limit. Reflex also adds heft foreign fees of nearly 3% on every transaction made while one is abroad, and missing your due dates can compound this problem.
Of course, with Reflex Mastercard® taking a chance on you with the poor credit history, they expect a high APR in return to cover their liabilities. Both the purchase and cash advance APRs are at a variable rate between 24.99% – 29.99% (Variable). Although this isn’t the highest out of all the credit cards targeted towards poor credit histories, it certainly isn’t the lowest either. However, since this card isn’t meant for balance transfers, it has no balance transfer APR.
Rise in Credit Limits
You can potentially raise your credit limit if you make your first six monthly minimum payments on time, and this rise in limit can help you borrow comparatively large sums in the future and help improve your credit standing making future borrowing costs cheaper. Simultaneously you can raise your credit score while minimizing your credit limit utilization.
Free Monthly Credit Score
You will receive a free monthly report for tracking your FICO score and help see the impact of paying your dues on time in helping improve your credit history and better manage your expenses. They can also offer personal on-call assistance for helping educate you about these things.
Instant approval is possible, as Celtic Bank can quickly verify your identity and ability to pay, and hence you can receive approval almost immediately after. A physical card can be mailed to you in 3 days at the earliest, and you need to activate your card in under 30 days. However, Reflex Mastercard® requires you to have a checking account. Some of the requirement include:
- Full name
- Residential address
- Phone number
- Email address
- Social Security number (SSN)
- Date of birth (DOB)
- Income & Employment Details
Overall, the Reflex Mastercard® is worth considering only if all your other credit card applications are denied due to a poor credit score. There are similar cards out there that have much lower APRs and fees, along with higher credit limits. Secured credit cards like this one might also be worth considering in order to achieve a higher credit limit. However, this might not always be worth it, as the heft fees can create problems for those missing payments given their paradoxical bad credit and lead them into a cycle of debt. Therefore, we don’t recommend this card, as other options may be available such as The Deserve PRO® Card or the Petal Visa® Credit Card.
